Buying licorice root for extraction, food processing, herbal preparations or pharmaceutical manufacturing starts with one decision: define the material your process actually needs. “Licorice root” is not a complete specification. Root length, cut geometry, particle size, moisture, cleanliness and packing all influence handling, extraction yield, storage and total landed cost.

This guide is written for procurement, quality and formulation teams evaluating bulk licorice root from Uzbekistan or another origin. It is a purchasing framework, not a substitute for the buyer’s approved specification or destination-market requirements.

1. Start with the intended process

A supplier can recommend a format only after understanding how the material will be used. Long root sticks may suit further cutting or traditional processing. Short sticks and crushed root reduce preparation work before extraction. Coins and long slices provide a visible, controlled cut. Powder is convenient for blending but requires tighter agreement on mesh size, microbiology and foreign-material controls.

2. Define dimensions with a tolerance

A nominal size alone is rarely sufficient. “5–6 cm sticks” should be supported by an agreed tolerance, sampling method and treatment of fines or oversize pieces. For crushed material, define the target range and the acceptable percentage passing below or remaining above it. For coins or slices, diameter may naturally vary with the root, while thickness can be controlled more directly.

Ask the supplier to state:

  • target length, thickness or particle-size range;
  • permitted fines and oversize fraction;
  • whether dimensions are measured by sieve analysis, manual sampling or another method;
  • whether the result is reported on each CoA or only in the product specification.

3. Agree the physical and identity parameters

A useful root specification normally describes botanical identity, plant part, appearance, colour and characteristic odour or taste. It should also define moisture or loss on drying, total ash where relevant, acid-insoluble ash where relevant, and limits for foreign matter.

These parameters answer different questions. Moisture relates to storage stability and commercial weight. Ash can indicate mineral residue. Acid-insoluble ash is commonly used as an indicator of soil or siliceous contamination. Foreign matter covers material that is not part of the agreed licorice root product.

The United States eCFR definition of licorice ingredients distinguishes dried root from water-extracted forms and includes analytical specifications for certain food uses. It is a useful regulatory reference, but it does not automatically become the specification for every country or application.

4. Build a risk-based testing plan

Test requirements should follow the intended use, destination market and the buyer’s risk assessment. A qualification package may address:

  • microbiological limits, including total count, yeast and mould and specified pathogens where applicable;
  • heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury;
  • pesticide residues against the relevant destination-market limits;
  • mycotoxins where the material and risk assessment require them;
  • glycyrrhizic acid or another marker compound when composition is commercially critical;
  • identity or authenticity testing appropriate to the botanical material.

Do not copy a generic internet specification into a purchase order. The analyte list, limits and methods must be reviewed for the final product category. For example, EU pesticide maximum residue levels are governed through Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 and its current amendments; the applicable commodity classification and current limits require confirmation.

5. Make the CoA unambiguous

A Certificate of Analysis should identify the product, batch or lot, specification version, test result, unit, acceptance limit and method or method reference. “Pass” can be appropriate for qualitative tests, but quantitative parameters are more useful when the actual result is reported.

Before approval, compare the supplier’s specification, sample CoA and your internal raw-material standard line by line. Resolve differences before a commercial shipment, not after arrival.

6. Specify packing and logistics

Packing is part of product quality. Confirm net weight, inner liner, outer bag or carton, closure, palletization, label information and container-loading plan. Discuss whether the route or climate requires additional moisture protection. Storage conditions and shelf-life assignment must match the agreed packaging system and supporting data.

The commercial request should also state destination, Incoterm, trial quantity, expected annual demand and required dispatch documents. This allows the supplier to quote the correct packing and logistics basis.

7. Require batch traceability

Lot identification should connect received material to production and dispatch records. EU General Food Law describes traceability across production, processing and distribution and requires food businesses to identify immediate suppliers and customers. Even when a particular shipment falls outside a specific rule, a clear lot code, production date and document trail are strong procurement controls.

Buyer checklist before requesting a quote

  • intended application and destination market;
  • exact root format and dimensional tolerance;
  • moisture, ash and foreign-matter requirements;
  • microbiological and contaminant test panel;
  • marker-compound requirement and analytical method, if applicable;
  • packaging, label and pallet requirements;
  • quantity, annual forecast and delivery term;
  • documents required for qualification and for each shipment.
